OBSESSION (in theatres)

By far the most innovative, genuine watchable “horror” films in theatres this year. Director/writer Curry Barker handily conquers the genre in the “be careful what you wish for” category; acted to sublimity by Michael Johnston “Bear”, Inde Navarrette “Nikki”; brilliance lies in the simplicity of a “One Wish Willow” a supernatural toy that grants just one irrevocable wish, never reversed regardless of consequences. Viewers instantly heed the dangers when Bear’s crush Nikki, falls lethally in love with him; obsession, devastating power of possession, freakish, frightening envy, uncontrollable, creepy, unhealthy passion, moods oscillating from benign to rhythmic pain satisfy the most avid of devotees. Horror must be feasible, believable to be accepted and hence terrifying to viewers, Barker grasps this conceit. “Obsession” is a gem of horrifying, torturous, reality alerting viewers to beware of exacerbating one’s desires without determining the extent of the collateral damage.
