The fifth season of this most compelling, compassionate close to “documentary” style series, screams with realism, almost beyond comprehension, but truthful, lived by the actors; suffering, grief and pain sears viewers to the core; brutally beautiful, undeniable unpreparedness of Israel on October 7th, 2023. Painfully strenuous to watch, but necessary, primarily, respectfully, for the creators: Lior Raz a former commando of the Israeli Defense Forces (starring as “Doron Kabilio” in the series) and Avi Issacharoff, a journalist saturated in Palestinian issues. Stunningly, the series focuses not only on the humanity, both Jew and Muslim, but their intimacy, relationships, saving each other’s lives; religion be damned.
Fascinating are the sequences searching for the culprits, disguised as upright citizens in Marseille, France; actor Yaakov Zada-Daniel, returns to Season 5, as “Eli”, seeking revenge for the familial slaughter of his wife and children; his performance ranks in the highest realm of gutted, savage elitism. Neophyte characters: exceedingly powerful are Melanie Laurant (“Inglourious, Bastards”) “Anne” as the devoted French wife of “Saeed el Hatib (Hakim Djaziri, is pulverizing in the role).
Why, since the massacre of innocents (perpetrated by Hamas), on this wretched day in history has antisemitism flourished, worldwide? College campuses, hotbeds of pervasive terror, support of Palestinian antics and hatred of Jews, Hezbollah flags and “Long live the Intifada” sung by citizens of the United States.
Jews, whose prodigiousness, acumen have saved millions, still hated, maligned? Possibly, “turn the other cheek” philosophy. Others fear of the “outliers” resolve of being “chosen”; civilizations who chose to eliminate them have like “Ozymandias” been erased; out of chaos (“Fauda”) Jews assert their right to be, and their legitimate claim to Israel. Pray they will perpetually prevail.
