THE SHEEP DETECTIVES (in theatres)

Rarely do I visit animated or child appropriate films! I was intrigued by “sheep”, Mary’s little lamb, known to be rather clueless, dumb animals; also furry, cute and huggable. But detectives no way! Based on the book by James Swann there is something charmingly simplistic about a flock that resolutely loves mystery stories, gifted every evening by Shepherd “George” (Hugh Jackman, imbues this lover of the flock with familial traits; each bears a name referencing their personalities or the intensity of their gaze.) Speaking English when humans do not invade their space. (Actors voices have never appealed to me, rather accept the animal, without Julia Louis-Dreyfus or Bryan Cranston oral enhancement).

Inevitably George is murdered and the myriads of suspects overpopulate the scenario. The flock’s discernment as master sleuths is more than clever, it is at times reminiscent of Agatha Christie, Sherlock Holmes, even Nancy Drew in the neophyte genre. It is attention cementing, curiosity clutching, silencing audiences for the duration. What was quantifying was the “winter sheep” (born at the coldest time of the year) a symbol of an outcast, outlier, excluded from the pack, unloved and bullied. So mimicking contemporary societies computer-generated, merciless pain, championing exclusion, even suicide in doomed bloggers.

Interesting in the New Testament Jesus is referenced as the “Lamb of God” who takes away the sins of the world; the lamb had to be perfect to represent a pure offering. Sheep symbolize innocence, purity, community, conformity, gentleness, spirituality and inner peace. “The Sheep Detectives” enfold the properties of the chosen.
