Director Ridley Scott (who I grace with tremendous respect) from “The Gladiator”, “White Squall”, “Alien” to “The Dog Stars” the fecundity of his masterful vision knows no bounds; it is a dystopian era and “Jasper” is the canine companion of survivor “Hig” (Jacob Elordi, a primary reason to view the film); in tandem, they fly to untamed areas to pilfer much needed supplies; at home, guarding their compound is “Bangley” (incomparable Josh Brolin, a secondary reason to visit this film); no one does toughness, arduous strength like Brolin; never mess with this character! Hig and Bangley are cautious warriors, with limited firepower, eradicating any interlopers to their space; silently watching 2 actors at the pinnacle of their acuity is a gift.
Hig’s choice to leave the familiar for the unknown brings audiences to the farm of “Cima” (flawless Margaret Qualley) and her father, “Pops” (staggeringly perfect Guy Pearce). After misguided intruders force them out, they enter a setting that appears dreamlike but proves deceptive, and Hig’s realizes there is “no place like home.”
The film’s genius lies in its celestial imagery: the dog stars are constellations, not screen dogs like Lassie, Rin Tin Tin, or Toto. Jasper has earned his place among the luminaries.
Ridley Scott has made a dreamy delight of Peter Heller’s (b1959-) 2012’s novel.
