Music and mythology, what could be more divine? Another magical, musical, filmic feat, seeing an award-winning Broadway musical with popcorn and reclining seats in your closest movie theatre. Blessed are those who witnessed this talent-studded play by Anais Mitchell’s folk opera directed by Brett Sullivan, starring Reeve Carney as “Orpheus”, Eva Noblezada as “Eurydice”, Patrick Page as “Hades”, Andre De Shields, as “Hermes” and Amber Gray as “Persephone”. A tragic pairing commences with the marriage of Orpheus (prodigious musician) and Eurydice (tree nymph), her imminent death (snake bite) and descent into Hades.
Cast is outrageously gifted: songsters, actors, dancers, camera worthy. Searingly intense, frenetic, pulsating believability, mesmerized by the horrors of hell. Patrick Page’s bass-baritone voice is riveting as the ultimate boss of the underworld, Hades. Palpable passion pulsates between Carney and Noblezada, youth and its vagaries foreshadows the capricious outcome of the myth. The pulverizing performance of Amber Gray as Persephone (nature Goddess, representing spring and the wife Hades, God of the Underworld) is one of the most pivotally remarkable on today’s stage and screen; the play dims with her absence.
Hermes sings prophetically to Orpheus “I will tell you where the road lies Between your ears, behind your eyes, that is the path to Paradise Likewise the road to ruin. “It is a sad song. It is a tragedy”. But continues to resonate throughout the ages.
