Films like “Motor City” are the supreme reason I adore the contemporary; contemporary anything: opera, music, art, and especially, film. Director Potsy Ponciroli (“Old Henry”) bamboozles viewers with a deliciously ugly, dialogue-free scenario taking place in 1977 Detroit. Actors Alan Ritchson, Shailene Woodley, Ben Foster, Pablo Schreiber stunningly star in this revenge, action, massively savage, love story; without verbiage they emote man’s primary sentiments: love, hatred, pain, loss and the disillusionment of the wrongly accused. Their body language brilliantly narrates the scheme. Reminiscent of silent films “The General” (1926 with Buster Keaton), “The Thief of Bagdad” (Sabu,1940), music is key to the core of silent plots and composer Steve Jablonsky gifts “Motor City” electrifying, energizing, hard rock numbers featuring David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Donna Summer; totally complementing the intensity of the pulverizing, gritty theme. With colossal awe and admiration Ponciroli’s ingenuity pulsates throughout this film of imaginative creativity and discerning judgment to the gems of past and reference to a future that has not forgotten their contributions.
