THE SOCIAL RECKONING   (in theatres)

The first scene in the film is the most telling; a young woman on a lonely highway, waiting for AAA to aid her failed automobile reacts insanely to two police officers who have offered to help her. She filmed her scathing, vitriolic, racist attack on the innocent police. Later, whistleblower Frances Haugen (b.1984) depicted depth- fully by actor Mikey Madison (“Anora”) blames Facebook for her radicalization.

Director/writer Aaron Sorkin (“The Social Network” 2010) instead of focusing on Mark Zuckerberg, robotically characterized by Jeremy Strong, concentrates on Frances and Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz (fine, Jeremy Allen White); Frances, a brain with a conscience, a previous employee of Google, Yelp, Pinterest, she discovered Facebook’s culpability in failing to address safety, mental health, political violence, promoting profit over accountability. She, a lone wolf, solicited journalist Horwitz (b1981) who is the author of “The Facebook Files”, targeting the absence of addressing the known flaws in their platforms; shielding millions of VIPs from toxicity. Together they were the force igniting Facebook into “Meta Platforms” in 2021.

“The Social Reckoning” would have had more titillation if Haugen’s process had been more intense. She is a woman, not only of substance, but pulsating metal (her physical vicissitudes would have prostrated most) propelled her spirit and mind into the future. Her quest for retribution soared, unfortunately the film did not.
