THE WEDDING BANQUET  ( English, Mandarin)  in theatres

“The course of true love never did run smooth” and director Andrew Ahn’s “The Wedding Banquet” jumps on the Shakespearean bandwagon and drives it full speed into a realistic romp appealing to all. A foursome of credited actors depict two gay couples trying to make sense of their lives, disappointments, and future commitments: “Min” (Han Gi-chan) loves “Chris” (Bowen Yang) but must forsake the relationship to convince his Korean grandmother “Ja-Young” (marvelous Youn Yuh-jung) that he intends to marry “Angela’ (Kelly Marie Tran) who is committed to “Lee” (Lily Gladstone); justifiable confusion. The hilarious predicaments woven with threads of failed intrauterine insemination (Lee desperately yearns for motherhood) and the “best laid plans” gyrate, uncontrollable from the sublime to uproarious absurdity, resulting in delicious, side-splitting pleasure.

A lively, jaunty contemporary remake of 1993’s “The Wedding Banquet” directed by Ang Lee. Both satisfy one’s lust for celebrating the absurd, satirical, superb silliness.

FOUR STARS!!!!
