2006 witnessed the debut of Twitter, the birth of Shiloh Jolie-Pitt; highest grossing movie of the year was “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest at $1.06 billion; execution of Saddam Hussein. It was the reality television show “To Catch a Predator” that confiscated American viewers from 2004-2007. Admittedly, I had never seen or known of its existence, nor its host Chris Hansen (1959-). Robert Pattinson is stratospheric in the role of Hansen; his every nuance seizes his greedy, ambitious quest to be the top of NBC’s roster. Pattinson succeeds even if the show did not.
Adult men and women were used to play teenage lurs; of particular interest is Skyler Gisondo as “Dan Plum”, a would-be actor, with a conscience; stunningly lucrative are the scenes between Plum and Hansen. Director Lance Oppenheim’s skilled interpretation of Hansen’s cagey, slippery trap of sinners is dynamite. Although the very much alive Hansen questions the sleazy motives of the “sting”, where he makes a pivotal appearance alerting the culprit of the authorities waiting for him.
“Primetime” scores in raising questions about entrapment, fidelity, ethicality; viewers become uniquely involved in the ensnarement, blame bleeding from truth tracker and those stung; uneasiness, guilt, justified?
