FAN (HINDI: ENGLISH SUBTITLES)

An original take on a used and abused theme: a star whose “stalker” becomes a menacing, obsessive, destructive force. Loosely based on 1981’s “The Fan” starring Lauren Becall and James Garner and 1996’s imitation starring Robert De Niro and Wesley Snipes; Bollywood heartthrob, Shah Rukh Khan, pulls out all the stops and plays both the “stalker” and the “star”. At first skeptical of the duality, I was converted within the first fifteen minutes; 21st century digital magic and Khan’s stellar, sensational performance as both characters, is a remarkable feat in method acting.

“Gurav Chandna” (Khan transformed into a 20- something- boy with a sculpted nose, an orthodontist’s dream of an overbite and slight build) has been obsessed his entire life with “Aryan Khanna” (Khan as his 48-year-old self); his room is a shrine to the mega star, who he resembles, so much so, that he wins a yearly contest as Khanna’s doppelganger. The plot explodes after Gurav’s deranged behavior comes to the attention of Aryan, who meets and dismisses his adoring devotee, resulting in a “hell hath no fury” like a shunned “fan”.

Spectacularly directed by Maneesh Sharma, riveting chase scenes, masterful examples of divine dexterity, render viewers motionless, breathless, solidly mesmerized.

But the glory belongs to Shah Rukh Khan, who proves one again, that he is more than just a pretty face.
