TRIFECTA AT THE FEST: 3 FOREIGN WINNERS FROM THE CHICAGO FILM FESTIVAL

MY SWEET PEPPER LAND: (IRAQ, FRANCE, GERMANY:ENGLISH SUBTITLES)

Scintillating blend of contemporary and archaic spheres in a destitute Kurdish village after the death of Saddam Hussein. “Govend” a gorgeous, idealistic educator convinces her father and seven brothers to allow her to return to her teaching position in this testosterone-driven village;  she meets “Baran” the police commissioner, a fearless war veteran, morally  intransigent, resulting in instantaneous conflagration. A luscious but unforgiving landscape adds to the isolation, terror and eventual triumph of this stunning, realistic scenario.

BANKLADY: (GERMANY: ENGLISH SUBTITLES)

“Gisela Werler”, massively bored with her job as a factory worker, meets and falls irrevocably, passionately in love with petty, bank robber “Peter/Hermann” to win his charming and fickle attention she converts to the criminal life and this conversion results in one of the most sensational transformations ever splayed on the screen. Based on a true story commencing in Germany in 1966, lasting into the twenty-first century; actress Nadeshda Brennicke’s performance as Gisela is riveting, resonating in the sparse category of the sublime.

LE-WEEK-END: (UK)

An intelligent, piercingly private, voyeuristic journey into the lives of “Meg” and “Duncan”; married thirty years, celebrating their anniversary, they venture to Paris where their circuitous, emotional lifelong relationship is revealed. Lindsay Duncan and Jim Broadbent are luminous as a couple, at times reminiscent of Tracy/Hepburn with a dash of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” Jeff Goldblum brings levity, laughter and love as a prior student, sycophant of Duncan’s. Director Roger Michell has created a pristine gem, a dissection of the human condition, realistic and rarely visited upon the screen.
