PROJECT HAIL MARY  (in theatres)

If Timothee Chalamet does not do a 2026 Docupic characterization of Thomas Edison, the 8.5 golden boy should find a worthy mantel in the home of Ryan Gosling who marvelously enchants viewers as scientist “Dr. Ryland Grace”. I loved every second of this film which could have cemented me to my seat even longer than its 156 minutes; devoid of scientific acuity directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller snag neophytes’ with a brilliant but accessible script based on the book by Andy Weir (now on my Kindle) whose use of physics, astronomy and biology birthed a masterpiece; it is wondrous scientifically, cinema-graphically (Greg Fraser,) symphonically  (Daniel Pemberton) primarily, the empathetic bond between a human and an inanimate object: 2000 “Cast Away” (Wilson), 2011 “War Horse” (Joey), 2013 “Her” (AI, Samantha), and the inimitable 2007 “Lars and the Real Girl”, where a terminally shy “Lars” (Ryan Gosiling’s prodigious performance is staggering) falls in love with an anatomically appropriate sex doll (RealDoll) “Bianca”. “Project Hail Mary’s” compelling friendship between Grace and “Rocky” is a breathless tribute to the boundless components of an immaculate heart, capabilities of a colossal mind, and the power to enfold the logistics/realities of its endless sanctions, welcoming warmth, protectiveness of a gentle, caressing breeze undefined but engulfing one’s spirit, a spirit grasping, supplicating for the divine embrace of impeccable, unblemished love.
