After seeing hundreds of Bollywood films; I recognize that they have a monopoly on “flirtation”; no studio can best them; they have taken the act of flirting, crystallizing it into an art form; a causal glance, a swirl of a sari, a sinuous dance, blossoms into a potent promise of intimacy more compelling, titillating than all the prurient, pulsating, instant gratification, pervasive in a myriad of contemporary (East/West) movies.
Imran Khan as playboy “Sriram”; with Lothario sleekness, romances the lithesome lovelies; carelessly, selfishly discards parental wishes; refuses to take life and its responsibilities seriously; he capitalizes on his cuteness, circumvents any unpleasantness, until he meets “Dia” (Kareena Kapoor, now in her prime as an actor) an activist; fearless, she is a one- woman force against the ineptitude of the government; polar opposites, magnetically drawn to each other. But it takes two and a half hours for Sriram’s epiphany; doffing the shackles of immaturity, pneumatic ego; becoming a legitimate candidate, worthy of Dia.
Loosely translated “Gori Tere Pyaar Mein” means “in your love, oh fair girl”; Dia is fair and Sriram is smitten; woefully, the same stale, simplistic scenario, plethora of dance numbers; stultifying, boring; leading to the perpetually, predestined conclusion.
TWO STARS!!
