It has been interminably long since “filmers” have met a more compelling protagonist in the guise of “Linda Liddle”: gifted in mathematical wizardry, drolly comical, comfortable in her nerdiness and friendship with her bird, confident that a “Vice Presidency” awaits when her boss dies, she’s earned and deserves the promotion after years of diligence; alas, upon his death, she’s denied what was rightfully Her’s by his hedonistic, handsome son “Bradley Preston”. A plane crash determines director Sam Rami’s (“Spider-Man” legacy) positively potent transformation of Linda and Bradley’s relationship. From a wimpy office dork, once she awakens on a desolate island with her injured boss, the only survivors of the crash, Linda morphs into a Lorna Croft, G. I. Jane, thirsting after the elements of survival; killing a boar, “bringing home the bacon” is a hilarious indication of her inimitable skills and lustful vision of the future.
Writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift (“Friday 13th”, “Baywatch”) could not have envisioned a more synchronistic pairing than Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien. McAdams is unlimited, unbounded as the multi-faceted Linda, emanating sharp-witted survival instincts and astute, uncanny dominance over her “boss”; O’Brien is not stupid and recognizes Linda’s acuity in vanquishing obstacles that would topple the masses; their perpetual repartee, reminiscent of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” Flavored with distrust, dislike and intelligent caution; cunning dialogue keeps viewers nail-biting, tensely nervous and intrepidly chained to their seats.
The “horror” aspect is prodigiously perfect, as the genre should be; all that transpires could have occurred, wondrously satisfying. McAdams and O’Brien make “Send Help”, so far, the foremost, preeminent movie of 2026!
