An animated romp focusing on every cliché known to man: “follow your dreams” no matter the challenges; once you hit “rock bottom” only way is up; never too old to give life’s expectations another shot. But every one of these aphorisms “sings” with originality in director Garth Jennings “Sing” an anthropomorphic jaunt that resonates demographically; the voices of Matthew McConaughey, Scarlett Johansson, Taron Egerton, Reese Witherspoon, John P. Riley infuse the personalities of Koloa bears, pigs, porcupines, bears with empathy usually reserved for two-legged creatures.
“Sing” address a plethora of themes: keeping a family business viable, crime capers, talented unknowns surfacing (aka Susan Boyle’s sensational rise to fame); mediums ringing on many levels, (“The Voice”, “Dancing With the Stars”), there is nothing more heartwarming than the unsung rising from obscurity to prominence. “Sing’s” luminosity, enchantment lies in elevating the familiar, accessible to a jubilant plateau; toe-tapping, finger-snapping musical score by Gary Barlow defies stationary static.
“Song” is wonderment, happiness, rapture….a warm, palatable gift worth experiencing over and over.
