This, my first excursion, into the “Twister” franchise, was a startling surprise; glued to my seat, slack-jawed, and hypnotized every frenzied second, it was a commanding and totally overwhelming filmic feat. Primarily, it made me happy. Happy to be wallowing, engrossed in visual phenomena, charismatic performances, and buzz-worthy cinematography.
From the outset actor Daisy Edgar-Jones is commanding as the neophyte tornado tamer, “Kate Carter”; she is a joyous weather chaser, loving every life-threatening moment of the hunt; brilliant, hoping her project would stymie the heart of the monster, until her vision, experiment, dies along with three of her friends. Another survivor “Javi” (stunning Anthony Ramos) convinces her, years later, to return to the tornado arena. That return results in a collision competition with “Tyler Owens” (Glen Powell, with thundering testosterone, nails the role) a YouTube dominate, who charms the masses with his thrilling trickery of the windy wonders. So pertinent, their titillating physical attraction is complemented by their mutual intellectual, analytical acuity. He, without masculine diminishment, recognizes her vast ingenuity in the scientific field and relishes it. Withholding from viewers a physicality, an intimacy, to be shared by them, alone, perfect conclusion.
“Twisters” with discerning realism depicts the horrendous devastation visited upon towns, villages, people whose unfortunate fate intersected the path of ruination.
