It is a healthy, hearty sensation knowing that some of you have questioned the five day hiatus between film reviews; yes, I have been going but I did not want to waste precious brain waves on the likes of “Gulliver’s Travels” and “Tron: The Legacy”. That being stated I have to confess to a life- long compelling fascination with Jonathan Swift’s brilliant satire, written in 1726 and still metaphorically perfect today. Gulliver discovers the aphrodisiac, the pungent power and glory of ruling, saving the miniscule Lilliputians; a giant’s inebriation and it joyous highs. Then cast into the world of Brobdingnag where he suffers the dire and humiliating degradation of being a pawn, a toy, whose domicile is a doll house; his master a monumental, terrorizing four year old child.

Swift (1667-1745) an Anglo-Irish clergyman, satirist, poet, essayist was a scholar of human behavior and a genius at analyzing man’s ineptitudes, fragilities, aggrandizements in all arenas. Almost three hundred years later his vision, insight, wisdom are embodied, emblazoned in the contemporary, digitalized age of today.

Leaving with a horde of ten year olds my guess was that Jonathan Swift, might not have been too dissatisfied with Jack Black in the role of Gulliver; for me it was my worst nightmare confirmed.

  1. I hate to confess this, but I throughly enjoyed it. [However, I was with the grandchildren] I was only sorry that Gulliver did not make it to the Land Where there is no Lie. I’d like to see how they would make that fit today.
