TO STREAM OR NOT TO………………THEREIN LIES THE CONUNDRUM

We have limitless choices on our devices; what in the past was a delicious dilemma, now, can result in traumatic options (some we must pay for). I have toughened my resolve; if not aroused in 15 minutes, switch films, regardless of the expense. Here Peneflix gifts those with limited patience and in need of a film distraction ASAP.

First runs capable of streaming:

“WAKE UP DEAD MAN: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY”, less than the first and overwhelms the meaningless second; the performances of Josh O’Connor (“Father Jud”), Daniel Craig (“Benoit Blanc”). Glen Close (“Martha”) Josh Brolin (“Msgr. Jefferson Wicks”) plus a myriad of others, centered in the heart of Our Lady of Perpetual Fortitude; a house of worship provides enough mystery and mayhem to hold one’s attention for its 2 hours and fourteen minutes. THREE STARS!!!

“FRANKENSTEIN” one of the finest films of the year. Director Guillermo del Toro and actors Oscar Isaac (“Victor Frankenstein”), Jacob Elordi (“Creature”) give epitomal depth to Mary Shelley’s eerie classic. FIVE STARS!!!!!

“ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER” , a critic favorite that did not sear my endearment until midway through the scenario; was never convinced of “Bob Ferguson’s” (Leonardo DiCaprio) devotion to the “cause”. Actor Sean Penn’s (“Colonel Lockjaw”) performance as the nefarious symbol of military might is worth visiting this pedantic, pandering movie.

THREE STARS!!!

“NOW YOU SEE ME: NOW YOU DON’T” is simply SILLY; imbued with a worthwhile cast: Dave Franco, Isla Fisher, Rosamund Pike. Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo and mediocre special effects. It proves one salient point: Jesse Eisenberg can eliminate thousands of “likes” he bastardizes in most of his films. The “like” disease is a toxic tragedy permeating contemporary vernacular. TWO STARS!!

“BLUE MOON”, based on the short, inebriated life of Lorenz Hart (1895-1943). Director Richard Linklater directs Ethan Hawke as the five foot, insecure prodigy; Hawke’s career-defining depiction is stratospherically brilliant; warranting, an Academy Award nomination. FOUR STARS!!!!

“Roofman” proves Channing Tatum’s acting acuity is undeniably secured in his delineation of charming, cunning criminal Jeffrey Manchester (1971-), a thief who entered buildings through the roof, relieving victims of their cash, cloaked with kindness and wily guile. FOUR STARS!!!!

“IF I HAD LEGS I’D KICK YOU”, Rose Bryne’s peerless, phenomenal performance cannot save the film from agonizing frustration as she navigates the undefined illness of her daughter and dismaying, decay of her professional life, partnerless, as it collapses around her. THREE STARS!!!

FOR HORROR MAVENS:

“RESURRECTION” & “MAN FINDS TAPE”; both placate palates questing terrifying titillation; Rebecca Hall’s performance is magnificently portrayed and developed in “Resurrection”, THREE & ½ STARS!!!

“Man Finds a Tape” reverberates, mimics “The Blair Witch Project”, main reason for its watchability TWO & ½ STARS!!

Enough for now….
