RTA, Rehabilitation Through the Arts. It works miraculously and its redolent power surges through the backbone of this remarkable film. Incarcerated inmates, serving interminable, hopeless sentences; real men rising above their crimes, circumstances, reveling in the vicissitudes of Shakespearian fictional and non-fictional characters, historical heroes and villains; unbridled talent oozing from their core, dormant since birth but flaming in a environment of desperation, despondent, desolate detention. Their demise, pain, sentient guilt feeds, nurtures their performances. Awestruck, viewers are allowed to watch their transformative powers; it is spellbinding and worthy of inimitable praise and admiration.
Actor Coleman Domingo (“Rustin”) stars and champions convicted killer John “Divine G” Whitfield, a founder of RTA, a self-styled lawyer, emancipator of his fellow inmates; seeking his own liberation he bruises his imaginative acuity by perpetually writing, starring in his own interpretations of iconic works. Many men play themselves to distinction. Director, writer Greg Kwedar, opens worlds never imagined, an intimacy cauterized, ignored by ordinary citizens, lionization belongs to him.
“Mickey B” an adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” filmed in Belfast’s Maghaberry Prison in 2007 was astounding; testament of man’s capabilities, rising above the “criminal” imbuing the psyche, heart, ambition of man’s descent into hell.
“Sing Sing’s” monumental lesson is one must never ignore the sacredness of every living, breathing creature.
