MINI MUSINGS TO BID SO LONG, FAREWELL, AUF WIEDERSEHEN, ADIEU TO 2020

“THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7”  (NETFLIX)

Director Aaron Sorkin once again uses his magical might in creating a pristine reminiscence of a bleak period in American history; 1968, Democratic National Convention disrupted by factions against the Vietnam War: Abbie Hoffman (Sacha Baron Cohen, physical facsimile); Tom Hayden (Eddie Redmayne); Mark Rylance and Frank Langella are expert renditions of William Kunstler and Judge Julius Hoffman (no relation of Abbie); a taste of the past mimicking contemporary traumas. FOUR STARS!!!!

“GREENLAND”    (AMAZON PRIME)

Surprisingly entertaining. Gerard Butler’s career as the perpetual savior of Presidents, nations, submarines, now in “Greenland”, rescuing his family from a meteoric catastrophe, flirting with destroying the planet, with the exception of…you guessed it! THREE & ½ STARS!!!

“BRIDGERTON”          (NETFLIX)

It was with massive trepidation that I stepped into the corseted, limited milieu of 1813 English society and its narrow, supercilious, dictates: women are worthless breeders, chattel to be sold to the highest bidder; director Julie Anne Robinson with wit, irony and “tongue in cheek” tweaks, gifts viewers a buffet of characters who delightfully maneuver a bygone era. THREE STARS!!!

“A TEACHER”                (HULU)

A problematic scenario that explores the boundaries of a teacher/pupil relationship. Kate Mara and Nick Robinson, under the direction of Hannah Fidell, Andrew Neal and Gillian Robespierre, are superb. The real case of teacher Mary Kay Letourneau and her sixth grade student, Vili Faulaau, seared the headlines for years. “A Teacher” address the long term psychological damage of this untoward phenom. THREE & ½ STARS!!!

“EQUINOX”    (DANISH: ENGLISH SUBTITLES)      (NETFLIX)

Lovers of the macabre, mythological folklore, twisted, convoluted characters, will be hooked by one woman’s imaginative journey to find, after twenty years, her missing sister. THREE STARS!!!

Peneflix wishes all Subscribers a blessed, healthy, peaceful 2021!
