BONHOEFFER: PASTOR. SPY. ASSASSIN. (in theatres)

“This is the end-for me, the beginning of life”. Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s (1906-1945) last words on the day he was hung by the Nazis, April 9th, at 39 years of age, days before the end of the war. It was a tragic conclusion to a life lived without regret; a life where a darkened shadow of doubt never interfered with the righteousness of his vision; a conscience of the purist clarity, never questioning his decision to oppose Hitler’s anti-Semitism and founded the Confessing Church. This is the blessed story of a short-lived, saintly life, actualized to the fullest.

Written, produced, directed by Todd Komarnicki (“Sully”) “Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin.” is a realistic, profoundly authentic tribute to a theologian, a pastor of exhaustive faith whose belief in God transcended Nazism, Hitler’s megalomania and lost his life, not his legacy. A German cast triumphs in this historical adaptation of a Lamed Vavnik (chosen one); Jonas Dassler is Dietrich Bonhoeffer, capturing his unique spirituality, displayed unconsciously in New York City where he bonds with the religiosity and Jazz of Harlem’s population. Totally color-blind, lacking nary an ounce of stereotypical angst. Returning to Germany as a “spy” and “assassin”; a pacifist who believes the death of one man could save millions of Jews and “undesirables”.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote volumes; his pedological treatise’s especially “The Cost of Discipleship” and “Life Together” are studied worldwide by scholars in diversified fields; he was a prolific genius who pleads that “we are not to simply bandage the wounds of victims beneath the wheels of injustice, we are to drive a spike into the wheel itself”. More ardent premise: “the ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world it leaves to its children”. Truth reverberates, spilling wisdom to all, regardless of creed.
