Accidentally, I ventured into this enchanting fantasy about a disillusioned psychiatrist, confronting the monotony of his everyday, vacuous existence; compulsively organized, his home and patients, robotically relegated into slots of predictability.
Simon Pegg is marvelous as the befuddled “shrink”; he exits his formal, prestigious English domain, travels the globe on an amorphous expedition, looking for answers to the elusive, inconclusive state of happiness. With the permission of his delightful, bewitching girlfriend “Clara” (naive, provocative, lovely performance by Rosamund Pike), “Simon”, hiking gear in tow, travels to China, Tibet, Africa, America; interacts with the good, bad, wise and wonderful; his adventures flaying preconceived, platitudinous formulas of what comprises “happiness”.
“Hector and the Search for Happiness” is joyously inane, massively silly, crazily cartoonish but resonates with an underlying richness; satisfaction of discovery and acute awareness; happiness seeps into one’s pores, when the lives of others take precedence over self-absorption.
Leaving Hector and his newly defined awakening, aware that I had been smiling, laughing, weeping, and gratifyingly “happy” that I made his acquaintance.
